We weren’t in a rush to replace our windows. So, I had time to get a lot of quotes and see what was out there. We started with some of the expensive options like Renewal and Marvin windows. Then we tried a home depot quote and a few kinds of general contractor firms. At this point I wasn’t really sure how to proceed. I hadn’t really compared all the windows and didn’t know if the more expensive options really were any better. The general contracts weren’t a lot of help; they didn’t know enough about windows one couldn’t even quote a full tear out vs doing inserts. So, I felt like going with them I might get a better deal on the windows, but wasn’t confident they would be installed correctly. Thankfully I found American Windows. Charlie came and gave us a much cheaper option. Then we went to look and compare the windows at their warehouse. In terms of quality we didn’t really see a difference between the restoration series they recommend and the options that were several times the price. I feel we got a very high quality window at a very reasonable price. They contract to the same install teams who only do windows and doors. They replaced 23 of our windows. The end result is a great product that was expertly installed. I would highly recommend you at least get a quote from American Windows. This is just not a company I’d give business to again.\n\nThe price Jim quoted us for the big curved window we wanted replaced was the lowest quote we got. He said he could tell our other windows were in bad shape and that if his company did a great job at a low price for this window, we would want to hire them again to do the rest of our windows. Honest statement and we appreciated the sentiment. He assured us that the new window would look exactly like the old window. Measurements were sent off and after waiting about double the estimated wait time we were notified that our new window was ready for install.\n\nWhen the workers came to install they realized about 30 minutes in that the new window was not the right dimensions. Jim ordered the window from their supplier a second time and we waited 4 months for it to come in.\n\nAfter installation of the correct window, we looked around and decided we weren’t happy with the quality of the installation. The window looked different than before - using thick plastic stripping all the way around on-top of the window frame. Because of the stacked nature of the windows, the stripping did not lay flat, and the workers had attempted to caulk the gaps that it left. In addition to the fact that they did not effectively caulk all the gaps - leaving cold air coming through, the caulk they did put down was globbed in the corners and messily spread out all over the sides. We let Jim know and he sent out their repair person.\n\nThe repair person came with no ladder or paper towels - asking to borrow both. He didn’t attempt to fix any of the badly placed caulk, just added more in the places it was missing. We questioned him about the stripping since it is not on any of our other windows and he said it’s just one way of doing it. “Would I do it this way in my own house? I don’t know…” He left and Jim or anyone else from the company did not follow up again to make sure we were now happy with the work.\n\nThese pictures are from the FINISHED product and is how our window looks now.
