Observing any drop in water pressure or an orange tint in your bathwater can be a clear sign that your plumbing is struggling with the region's unique water chemistry. We have exceptionally soft water from the Bull Run Watershed, and while it is great for your skin, it is actually slightly corrosive to older metal pipes. This typically causes galvanized steel lines—found in many of our 1920s to 1960s-era homes—to rust from the inside out. Furthermore, if you notice slow drains after a heavy rainfall, it may indicate that moisture has saturated the volcanic soil and clay around your foundation. This constant saturation puts pressure on aging clay sewer laterals, often forcing tree roots through the joints and causing recurring backups.

You can perform a few simple assessments before reaching out to a local plumber. First, check your outdoor hose bibs before the fall rains begin; ensuring they are disconnected and covered is vital because our high-moisture climate can lead to rot if uninsulated pipes freeze and crack behind the siding. If you own a home in an older neighborhood like Irvington, take a look at any exposed supply lines in the basement or crawlspace. If you see dull gray pipes with threaded joints, you likely have original galvanized steel that has likely narrowed due to internal corrosion. However, if those pipes appear silver-gray or leaden and are soft enough to scratch with a coin, you might have a lead service connection. In that case, do not attempt any DIY repairs—stop immediately and call an expert to discuss safe replacement options.

Many specialized services address the specific needs of our Pacific Northwest environment. Whole-house repiping is extremely common here because our soft BULL Run water aggressively corrodes the galvanized steel supply lines found in thousands of local Craftsman and Victorian homes. If you are experiencing low water pressure, technicians can replace those rusted pipes with modern PEX or copper. Additionally, many teams offer hydro-jetting and sewer camera inspections to combat tree root intrusion. Because our wet climate keeps the soil saturated, roots from our large evergreens frequently find their way into the joints of old clay sewer segments. For those looking to avoid major excavation, trenchless sewer repair is a popular local option that allows a trusted plumber to fix your line without destroying your lawn or driveway.

To find the best plumbing company in Portland, start by verifying that any candidate holds a valid license from the Oregon Construction Contractors Board. They should also carry full general liability and workers' compensation insurance. A plumber with true local expertise will be familiar with the city's side sewer regulations and the unique challenges posed by our hillside neighborhoods, where unstable glacial till can complicate underground repairs. To streamline your search, you can refer to Best Pick Reports. Their 6-step merit-based certification process filters for companies with at least a 4.0 Google rating or 80% satisfaction in independent surveys. Using an annually re-verified, certified plumbing company also qualifies you for a $2,500 guarantee on labor costs, which helps reduce the risk of a major home repair.
