"John Welmers Jgwelmers@gmail.com 2409 Briarwood Road Baltimore, MD 21209 Initial work seemed great. We hired Kenny and his crew to scrape and power wash old paint off of our brick home, apply two coats of ROMABIO, paint metal siding, and work on the brick steps in the front. The painters were incredibly polite, friendly and the house painting was great. The scraping and power washing left latex paint chips everywhere. No plastic was put down. The power washing blew off pieces of insulation and painted wood, which we found out contained old lead paint. Those paint chips were blown all over our flower beds, into our gutters and on our outdoor furniture. Their ladders left dents in our aluminum siding, too. The brick step repair was terrible. The steps were uneven and mortar was used to fill in blank spots where a brick should go. I had them repair their "repair" and it is still uneven, the mortar is a different color and there are empty spots filled with mortar instead of brick. $4,000 for this. They had some shutters from another job and offered them to us for free. Sounds great! They scraped, repaired, repainted and attached them to our house. They look wonderful. Unfortunately, they didn't test for lead paint and covered a very large part of our yard with lead paint chips. They also worked under a tree where my child's swing is. Dirt, lead paint, swings, feet and children are not a great combination. To remedy the situation, an employee was sent to vacuum our yard with a shop vac. He didn't speak English, so we tried to help him, but it was an uncomfortable mess. He was on his hands and knees, no gloves, mask or even the right shop vac, trying to fix a problem he seemed unaware of. The boss, Kenny, never showed up. Lead paint chips were still found everywhere after vacuuming. Kenny promised he would do whatever it took to fix the problem. The only remedy we were recommended, that would fix the problem completely, was to have the soil removed, replaced and sodded. Kenny then became unresponsive, months went by and eventually said his insurance wouldn't cover it. They finally returned 6 months later. They painted part of the house they missed. Kenny arrived, pulled me aside and told me there was lead everywhere and I couldn't really prove they had done anything. He didn't realize we had the soil tested when we moved in and tested after they left the lead paint shower. Big difference! We both agreed that removing all of that soil was a bit extreme, though. The compromise was to remove a few inches of soil in the main work zones, cover it with new soil and grass seed, and call it a day. Also add some mulch in one big area. He shook my hand and left. His employees then took over, used a few bags of yard patch to cover the work zones and added some bags of mulch. Not quite what we agreed upon, but out of frustration, I decided I didn't want their help anymore. We were given very little help or guidance when it came to fixing this lead problem. We were very respectful and patient throughout the entire process, too. Seems like these people do an all around great job and this was some sort of fluke"

"The workmanship was exemplary, and the supervisor made several suggestions (some of which increased their workload) to improve the finished product -- things that I hadn't thought of."

"A subcontractor did our work and it did not turn out very well. Based on reviews, I think that if Klappenberger themselves had done the work it would have been fine, but the experience with the subcontractor was challenging. The subcontractors were very nice people but their work was disappointing."

"The supervisor didn't have a clue about the work required. He was constantly complaining about it. The deck that was painted missed a lot of spots and the coverage was inconsistant. The deck had to be repainted 6 months later by someone else."

"The quality of work was excellent! They painted several rooms as well as kitchen cabinets. They also did minor carpentry and installed heavy crystal chandelier. They were pleasant and good to work with throughout the project."
